Psoriasis and healthy eating

Does being overweight make psoriasis worse?

Studies have shown that psoriasis tends to be more severe and more resistant to treatment in overweight people. Moreover, excess weight in the skin fold areas, such as the armpits and groin and under the breasts, can increase the risk of bacterial and fungal infection. Excess weight also puts extra strain on the joints which can become painful over time.

Studies have also shown that in people who are overweight, psoriasis is often associated with lipid disorders and increased levels of uric acid. These biological imbalances can exacerbate the side effects of certain drugs, such as cyclosporin and retinoids, which are used to treat psoriasis.

People who are overweight are therefore advised follow a balanced diet as prescribed by a dietician.

Should people who have psoriasis follow a special diet?

No diet can cure psoriasis, but it is important to have a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits. Your diet should include sufficient amounts of fruit and vegetables to give you fibre, vitamins and minerals. It is best to limit your consumption of saturated fats (animal fats) and to eat plenty of food rich in essential fatty acids, such as cereals and vegetable oils. Lastly, consuming too much fatty food and alcohol can overburden the liver, which results in toxins accumulating in the blood. As waste is also eliminated through the skin, it must work at full capacity when there is a large amount of toxins, increasing the likelihood of flares.

Can food supplements improve psoriasis?

Taking zinc, magnesium, vitamin B6 and the anti-oxidant vitamins A, C and E can help people with psoriasis. Studies are currently underway to examine the effects of fish oils, which are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, as it is thought that they may help to space out flares. However, food supplements cannot cure psoriasis.

Should people with psoriasis exercise regularly?

Physical activity is generally good for physical and mental health. Stress is known to trigger flares of psoriasis, and by helping the body get rid of excess tension, exercise helps combat stress. Exercise is a good way of keeping in shape, raising your spirits and improving your self-image.
