How can I live a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy, well-balanced lifestyle, will have a positive effect on your psoriasis. Although it has not been scientifically proven, we know that eating overly rich food and drinking too much alcohol make psoriasis worse. Toxins accumulate in the blood, and are then eliminated through the skin. When you consume too much fatty food or alcohol, the skin has to work at full capacity. As a result, it becomes vulnerable to renewed flares of psoriasis (see the section on a balanced diet).

Alcohol in particular may increase itchiness, increase the risk of flares and make the condition more resistant to treatment. It also alters the metabolism of certain medications and increases their toxicity. Smoking is equally harmful (see the section on the effects of smoking). On the other hand, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, for example, help prevent skin dryness and are sometimes prescribed when a patient is taking retinoids. Your diet should include fruit and vegetables in sufficient amounts to give you fibre, vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet helps the immune system. So this summer, take the time to plan balanced meals.

Take advantage of the good weather during summer to start exercising, unless you have arthritis which makes this impossible. Exercise is a great way to relax while keeping fit, lifting your spirits and improving your self-image. If the feet are inflammed, you should avoid jogging and aerobics, which can exacerbate inflammation of the foot. A 30 minute walk or a stint in the garden is all you need in this situation.
